1. Overview and scope

Open News is a global news context and verification service. This policy applies to our websites, article pages, feeds, recommendations, comments, correction and legal-request tools, and related services that link to it.

Pre-launch notice

Open News is currently in pre-launch. The operating legal entity, registered address and dedicated privacy contact must be inserted here before public launch. Until then, no advertising or non-essential tracking should be enabled.

2. Information we handle

Information you provide

  • Comments, replies, source submissions and context you add.
  • Correction, copyright, legal, moderation and privacy requests.
  • Contact details and verification information when needed to respond to a request.
  • Topic follows, saves, reactions and other preferences.

Information collected automatically

  • Basic device, browser, language, approximate region, referring page and request-log information.
  • Interactions with stories, sources, recommendations and site controls.
  • Security, fraud-prevention, rate-limit and moderation signals.
  • Cookie and similar-technology choices.

We do not ask guest commenters to create an account. We may assign a short-lived pseudonymous identifier to prevent abuse and maintain discussion continuity.

3. Why we use information

PurposeTypical basis where applicable
Deliver the site, saves, comments and requested featuresContract or steps requested by you
Security, abuse prevention and service integrityLegitimate interests and legal obligations
Moderate comments and respond to noticesLegitimate interests and legal obligations
Personalized recommendationsConsent where required; otherwise applicable legitimate interests
Analytics and advertisingConsent where required
Corrections, records and legal claimsLegal obligations and legitimate interests

We apply data-minimization and purpose-limitation principles. We do not use sensitive information to personalize advertising.

4. AI and automated systems

AI assists with drafting, organizing information, recommendations, abuse detection and moderation triage. Published reporting remains subject to our editorial verification process. Automated signals may route content or comments to review, but high-risk editorial and moderation decisions require human oversight. You may request review of a decision that materially affects your submitted content.

5. Cookies and similar technologies

Necessary storage supports security and records your consent choice. Optional functional, analytics and advertising technologies remain disabled unless enabled through the consent controls. You can reopen Cookie preferences at any time. In the current pre-launch version, choices are stored for the browser session and expire when that session ends.

We honor recognized Global Privacy Control signals for advertising-related sale or sharing opt-outs. Before Google advertising is activated for visitors in the EEA, United Kingdom or Switzerland, Open News must deploy a Google-certified consent management platform integrated with the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework.

6. Sharing and international transfers

We may disclose information to hosting, security, moderation, analytics, communications and advertising providers only as needed for their services; to authorities or other parties when legally required; to protect rights and safety; or as part of a corporate transaction. We do not sell personal information for money.

Some providers may process information outside your country. Where required, we use recognized transfer safeguards and provide information about relevant recipients and safeguards.

7. Retention and security

We retain information only as long as reasonably necessary for the stated purpose, legal requirements, dispute resolution and security. Published comments normally remain while the discussion is available unless removed; moderation and legal records may be retained longer. Temporary security logs should use short, documented retention periods. Consent choices in this pre-launch build are session-based.

We use proportionate technical and organizational safeguards. No online system can be guaranteed completely secure.

8. Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, know, correct, delete, restrict or object to processing, receive portable data, withdraw consent, appeal certain decisions, and complain to a data-protection authority. California residents may also have rights to opt out of sale or sharing and to limit certain uses of sensitive personal information, without discrimination.

We will honor applicable browser-based opt-out signals, including Global Privacy Control, where legally required. Identity verification may be necessary for access, correction or deletion requests, but not for a valid opt-out signal where verification is not required.

9. Children

Open News is a general-audience service and is not directed to children under 16. Do not submit personal information if you are below the minimum age applicable where you live. If we learn that we collected a child’s information without required permission, we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

10. Changes

We will update the date above and provide appropriate notice before material changes take effect. If a change requires new consent, optional processing will remain disabled until that consent is obtained.

11. Contact and requests

Privacy, correction, legal and copyright request channels will be published and tested before public launch. Requests should identify the relevant article, comment or account information and the right being exercised. This draft must not be treated as launch-ready until the operator identity and working contact methods are completed.
